The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Utah Transit
Authority (UTA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Utah Department
of Transportation (UDOT) in conjunction with Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) are currently preparing an Alternatives Analysis
(AA)/Environmental Assessment (EA) for transit and roadway improvements
in Utah County, Utah. Initially it was determined that an Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) was the appropriate level of documentation for
the project; however, based on preliminary findings it has been determined
that an EA will be adequate.
The proposed BRT system will be approximately 11 miles long with more
than 70 percent of the system on center running bus only lanes. The
BRT system will extend from the planned Orem Intermodal Center near
Utah
Valley University (UVU) on the north to a location near the Provo Towne
Centre Mall and East Bay Business Complex (Novell Campus) on the south.
The planned BRT system will serve transit markets that include Brigham
Young University (BYU), Utah Valley University (UVU), existing and
planned student housing, retail malls, several employment centers,
and historic
downtown Provo, as well as linking to the two regional intermodal centers.
The new BRT system will save approximately 16 acres of parking at BYU
and UVU and is expected to increase the corridor carrying capacity
in Orem between 16 to 36%. Preliminary estimates indicate BRT ridership
on opening day (2012) will be more than 14,000.
